Last year, 2020, South African adult company LuvLand saw record demand for imported sex dolls. Mind you, in 2018, they ordered just six sex dolls from a Chinese doll factory to test market demand.
Patrick Meyer, the company's operations manager, said, "We initially ordered just six sex dolls in October, and the supplier delivered the product to us a few weeks later. By the end of the year, there was only one left in stock, bearing in mind that China's GDP per capita is just over $6,300."

Thereafter, by early 2019, the company was wholesaling 50 sex dolls a month from China, but the supply was still insufficient. Today, Meyer's company purchases about 200 per month. Consumers' obsession with sex dolls has also increased the industry's demand for imports of such products.
These shemale sex dolls are very realistic because they weigh about the same as real people and are made of hard materials such as silicone or TPE. The skin looks more realistic and the steel skeleton allows them to better mimic humans and perform various body movements. From the outside, they seem to be only about sex, but Meyer has started to think over the past few years that there is more to the appeal of these dolls than just sex in the sales process.

He says: "There is a big market for sex dolls in South Africa and a sex doll usually costs between $1,200 and $2,000. Although they are dolls, the actual weight in the sex doll storage case is around 30 kilograms and they are usually made from real people," he says. Some consumers keep them in their kitchens or living rooms to interact with them. For those who feel lonely, dolls are a way to enjoy their spiritual life. For those who are withdrawn and insecure, sex dolls are a companion."
Soroka, a social work specialist in mental health, sexuality and marriage, is not optimistic about the sudden increase in demand for sex dolls in South Africa. She fears that people will end up owning dolls rather than people, and human self-esteem is very fragile. However, due to the lack of open and honest discussions about socialization, intimacy, etc., the reality is that consumers tend to opt for easier ways to satisfy their psychological needs.

But she also admits that despite some misgivings, sex dolls eventually landed on the South African market and created a wave of popularity. She says: "For all their contradictions, they represent a natural evolution of social development, a product of human needs combined with technology. Existence is justified."
