Finding sources for a university assignment can feel like the easy part. You search Google Scholar, browse your university library, save a few journal articles and think you are ready to write.
But finding an academic source and actually using it well are two different things.
When I work through research for an assignment, I find it much more useful to ask, “What does this source add to my argument?” rather than simply asking whether it is academic. A journal article can be peer-reviewed and still have weaknesses. Equally, a government report, research organisation or professional body can provide valuable evidence when it is relevant to the question.
The real skill is learning how to judge the evidence in front of you.
What Does It Mean to Analyse an Academic Source?
Analysing a source means looking beyond what the author has said. You need to consider how the argument was developed, what evidence supports it and whether the conclusions are convincing.
This is where analysis differs from summary.
A summary explains the main points of a source. Analysis asks what those points mean and how much confidence you should place in them.
For example, imagine you are writing about remote working and employee productivity. A study might report that employees working from home experienced higher productivity.
You could simply write:
Smith (2025) found that employees working remotely reported higher productivity.
That is accurate, but it is mainly descriptive.
A more critical approach would look at how productivity was measured and whether the research design was strong enough to support the conclusion:
Smith (2025) found that remote workers reported higher productivity, although the reliance on self-reported measures makes it difficult to determine whether the reported improvement reflects actual changes in performance.
The second version gives the reader more useful information. It recognises the research finding but also considers its limitation.
That is what university lecturers generally mean when they ask for critical analysis.
Start by Understanding the Source
Before deciding whether a source is useful, I first try to understand what kind of source it is and why it exists.
Ask yourself:
- Who wrote it?
- Where was it published?
- When was it published?
- Who is the intended audience?
- What is the author's purpose?
- Is it presenting original research or discussing existing research?
- How closely does it relate to your assignment question?
These questions help put the source into context.
The Association of College and Research Libraries explains that authority depends on context. In other words, an author's expertise needs to be considered in relation to the subject being researched.
That is worth remembering when you are researching online. Someone may have impressive qualifications, but that does not automatically make them an expert in every subject.
Know the Difference Between Primary and Secondary Sources
Another useful starting point is identifying whether you are looking at a primary or secondary source.
A primary source contains original or first-hand evidence. Depending on your course, this could be a research study, interview, dataset, historical document, experiment, court decision or government record.
A secondary source discusses, interprets or evaluates information produced elsewhere. Academic books, literature reviews and review articles are common examples.
The distinction is important because different assignments require different kinds of evidence.
For example, if you are investigating the economic effects of a government policy, official statistics might provide the raw evidence you need. Academic researchers can then help you interpret those figures and understand the wider debate.
You do not necessarily have to choose between primary and secondary sources. Often, using both gives you a much stronger basis for your argument.
Check the Author's Expertise
Once I have established what a source is, I look at who produced it.
Check the author's:
- Academic or professional background
- University or organisational affiliation
- Previous research
- Publications in the field
- Relevant experience
It is also worth considering the publication itself.
A paper published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal has gone through an academic review process. That gives you some reassurance about the quality-control process behind the research.
However, peer review does not mean a source is automatically correct.
Researchers can disagree. Studies can have small samples, imperfect methods or conclusions that need further investigation. Your job as a student is not to assume that everything in a journal must be true. It is to understand the evidence and evaluate it carefully.
Harvard Library explains that peer review involves other scholars assessing research before publication and may involve requests for revision.
So, treat peer review as one useful indicator of credibility rather than the final answer to your evaluation.
Look Closely at the Methodology
This is often the part of a paper that students skip, especially when they are working against a deadline.
I understand the temptation. Academic papers can be long and the methodology section is rarely the easiest part to read.
But if you want to evaluate a source properly, you need to understand how the evidence was produced.
Depending on the subject, look at:
- The research design
- Number and type of participants
- Sampling method
- Data collection process
- Variables being measured
- Methods of analysis
- Comparison or control groups
- Stated limitations
Suppose a study claims that a particular teaching method improves exam performance. You need to know more than the final result.
How many students took part? Were they from one university or several? Was there a comparison group? How long did the study last? How was performance measured?
A study involving 40 students may still be valuable, but you should be careful about using it as proof that the same result applies to millions of students.
The same applies to cause and effect. If two things happen together, that does not automatically mean one caused the other.
Cochrane's guidance on assessing risk of bias is a useful example of how researchers examine different aspects of study design rather than relying on a simple label such as “good study” or “bad study”.
You can apply the same thinking to university research, even when your assignment is not in medicine.
Consider Bias and Limitations
No research exists in a vacuum.
Researchers make choices about what to study, who to include, what data to collect and how to interpret the results. Those choices can affect the outcome.
When reading a source, consider whether:
- The sample excludes important groups
- The research has a narrow focus
- The author acknowledges alternative explanations
- The funding source could create a potential conflict of interest
- The measurements accurately reflect what the researchers claim to be studying
- The conclusions go further than the evidence allows
You do not need to accuse a researcher of being biased every time you find a limitation.
A limitation simply tells you something about how confidently the findings should be interpreted.
For instance, if participants report their own behaviour, their answers may not perfectly reflect what they actually do. That does not make the study worthless. It simply means you should be careful about how you use its findings.
Make Sure the Source Is Actually Relevant
This sounds obvious, but it is surprisingly easy to get wrong.
A source can be credible and still have little value for your particular assignment.
I have found that one of the easiest ways to avoid this problem is to start with the claim you want to make.
Ask:
What am I trying to prove?
Then ask:
What evidence would support that claim?
Finally:
Does this source actually provide that evidence?
For example, suppose your assignment examines the effect of social media on adolescent mental health. A highly respected study about social media use among older adults might still be interesting, but it does not directly answer your question.
Relevance matters just as much as credibility.
The University of Illinois Library also recommends considering both the credibility and relevance of information when evaluating sources.
Do Not Rely Only on the Abstract
The abstract is useful for deciding whether an article is worth reading. It is not enough for a serious evaluation.
When I am short on time, I usually approach a research paper in stages.
First, get the basic idea
Read the title, abstract, introduction and conclusion.
At this point, you should be able to answer:
- What is the research about?
- What question is being investigated?
- What did the researchers find?
- Why do they think the findings matter?
Then check the evidence
Look at the methodology and results.
This is where you find out whether the research actually supports the claims made in the abstract and discussion.
Finally, question the interpretation
Go back to the discussion section and compare the researchers' conclusions with their actual findings.
Sometimes an article's main message sounds very strong until you look closely at the limitations. That is one reason I would avoid building an argument around an article after reading only its abstract.
Use Lateral Reading for Online Sources
Online research creates another challenge. You can easily spend a lot of time reading a webpage without checking who produced it or where its information came from.
The SIFT method, associated with information-literacy researcher Mike Caulfield, provides a useful way of dealing with this. It encourages readers to stop, investigate the source, look for stronger coverage and trace important claims back to their original evidence.
In practical terms, if you see an online article claiming that “research proves” something, do not immediately cite the article.
Try to find the original research.
Then ask whether the original study actually says what the webpage claims it says.
This is especially important when you are using newspapers, corporate websites or general-interest articles to find academic research.

Compare Different Sources
One of the clearest signs of stronger academic writing is that the writer does not treat every source as an isolated piece of information.
Suppose three studies examine whether artificial intelligence improves student learning.
The first finds significant benefits. The second finds only a small improvement. The third finds no significant effect.
That disagreement gives you something to analyse.
Instead of describing all three studies separately, look for reasons why their findings might differ.
Perhaps they:
- Studied different age groups
- Used different definitions of “learning”
- Had different sample sizes
- Used different research methods
- Examined different AI tools
- Conducted the research at different times
This kind of comparison helps you understand research as an ongoing academic discussion rather than a collection of facts.
The ACRL describes scholarship as a conversation, which is a useful way to think about academic literature. Researchers build on, challenge and refine one another's work.
Bring the Analysis Into Your Own Argument
There is little value in spending several paragraphs explaining what a researcher said if you never connect that research to your own position.
Your assignment should still be driven by your argument.
A simple paragraph structure can help:
- Make your point.
- Introduce relevant evidence.
- Explain what the evidence shows.
- Evaluate its strength or limitation.
- Connect it back to the assignment question.
For example:
Flexible working may improve employee satisfaction by giving workers greater control over how they organise their working day. Smith (2025) found higher reported satisfaction among employees with access to flexible working arrangements. However, the study relied heavily on self-reported data, so the findings provide stronger evidence about employees' perceptions than about measurable changes in workplace performance. The research nevertheless supports the argument that employee autonomy may contribute to job satisfaction.
The important part is that the paragraph is not simply about Smith.
Smith's research is being used to develop an argument.
That distinction can make a significant difference to the quality of an assignment.
A Quick Checklist for Analysing Academic Sources
Before you add a source to your reference list, ask yourself:
- Is it relevant to my assignment question?
- Who wrote it?
- What expertise does the author have?
- Where was it published?
- Is it peer-reviewed where appropriate?
- Is the publication date suitable?
- Is it a primary or secondary source?
- What evidence does it use?
- How was the evidence collected?
- Are there methodological weaknesses?
- Does the author acknowledge limitations?
- Could there be potential bias or conflicts of interest?
- Do the conclusions match the evidence?
- How does this source compare with other research?
- Can I explain both its strengths and weaknesses?
If you can answer these questions, you are moving beyond simply finding “good references”. You are evaluating the evidence that supports your academic work.
Final Thoughts
Good source analysis is not about criticising every paper you read. It is about understanding what a source can and cannot tell you.
A strong university assignment uses evidence selectively. It recognises useful research, questions weak or limited evidence, compares different viewpoints and explains how the available evidence supports the overall argument.
Most importantly, don't confuse having lots of references with having a well-researched assignment. Ten sources that you barely understand will not necessarily strengthen your work. A smaller number of relevant, carefully evaluated sources can be far more useful.
